FADBy Santa & Cole Originally conceived to light the erstwhile central headquarters of FAD (Fostering Arts and Design) – one of the foremost associations of Barcelona city since 1903 and a spearhead for decades in promoting architecture and perspective arts in Spain – the FAD table and floor lamps once again strike a chord as an example of truly understood industrial craftsmanship by no means folkloric. A solid cylinder oak structure, with four openings hollowed out lengthwise, produces a symmetrical vertical shaft that supports an almost cylindrical white linen shade. The striking cross-shaped base, exuding Miguel Milá’s creation, is the same size as the lower circumference of the shade. Unadulterated simplicity without surrendering to pointless frills.
Básica mínimaBy Santa & Cole This pocket edition of the Básica lamp, for use in a setting requiring a smaller lamp or less intense light, is ideal for bedside tables or isolated light points. On this version, a small metal base, as inconspicuous as a whisper, ensures this miniature will never fall off-balance. Two unique versions of the shade and finish are available.
MoragasBy Santa & Cole NUEVO ESTILO AWARD, Madrid 1992 At the ripe old age of forty-four, rationalist architect and the first chairman of the FAD Industrial Design Association Antoni de Moragas Gallissà (1913-1985) conceived this lamp to use in his own professional office. A large solid wood cylinder holds aloft a luminous head with three bulbs providing a well-distributed source of light, all covered by a substantial circular shade. The white cotton ribbon of this shade is typically used for bookbinding and has a silk thread running along the edge, providing an asymmetry that generates warm light and shade effects against the light. By all accounts, Moragas had this lamp on his desk and regularly used it to place notes and cards marking the visits he’d just received, placed in between the folds in the ribbon. Today, the Moragas lamp is part of our Design Classics collection, a series of objects created at different times of modernism with the twofold aim of strengthening historical memory – which is sometimes endangered – and putting forward critical discussion on creation in industrial design beyond mere trends.
DianaBy Santa & Cole Treasured architect duo Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá once again enlisted the help of Alfonso’s younger brother and designer Miguel Milá in order to tackle the lighting in the new official office of the erstwhile mayor of Olympic Barcelona Pascual Maragall. The administrative centre would also be frequented by a large body of the international political community and was in urgent need of a revamp that would showcase the excellent standard of Barcelona design on the world stage. Santa & Cole produced the original lamps and in 1995 the company began the company embarked on limited production of this superbly austere series of lamps. Diana is slender, sturdy and remarkably lucid. It is formed by a large central metal base which houses a shaft, the diameter of which gets thinner as it rises, supporting a white linen shade in a smooth cone-like shape that disperses the light of two bulbs arranged in such a way as to avoid shadows forming on the shade. Its appearance seamlessly strikes a balance between classicism and modernism both at home and in the office. In keeping with the calling of their designers, all floor and table versions of the Diana series seek to conjure up “an image that is as timeless as can be”.
BásicaBy Santa & Cole At a time when international preferences were leaning towards lamps with metal shafts and dichroic halogen bulbs (in other words, cool beam and touch), the Básica lamp sought to champion other, warmer alternatives. A wooden column, held up by a heavy metal base with the same diameter, supports a range of shades in different shapes and colours. Although the lamp balances well in this format, an optional, wider base may be placed underneath. The Básica lamp heralded a revival of natural materials, such as wood, stitched cardboard or ribbons, and provided Santa & Cole with a springboard for international expansion, generating an alternative current in Europe that challenged prevalent tastes. A more familiar, craftsman-like and gentle form of modernity was being advocated.
